City Holds Joint Workshop with University of Maryland for Competence of Public Services

The point is good governance is a manifestation of our commitment, one of which is highlighted through knowledge exchange

The city administration held a virtual workshop with the University of Maryland at Great Hall, Jakarta City Hall, Tuesday (11/10), in order to mutually improve competencies in terms of services and formulation of public policies.

It was attended by Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan; Former Governor of Maryland, Martin O'Malley; and Dean of the University of Maryland of Public Policy, Prof. Robert C. Orr, as well as civil servants and non civil servants.

In his speech, the Governor welcomed the holding of workshops and training on public services and policies. He appreciated the involvement of academics in contributing ideas and innovations to formulate policies, especially during the pandemic.

"This pandemic has made service patterns and public policy making changes and adjustments a little, so this event is very important for the future of our services thus there is an increase in the competence and capacity of our apparatus towards more effective public services, either during or after the pandemic," he expressed, quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Tuesday (11/10).

He explained it would be an arena for knowledge exchange and learning, especially on Fundamental Leadership and Strategic Planning to create a Resilient City in the 21st Century, as well as Modern Infrastructure for Sustainable Cities. It was tailored to the needs of the community and formulated based on accountability and professionalism.

"The point is good governance is a manifestation of our commitment, one of which is highlighted through knowledge exchange. Hence, I emphasize that a developed city can't manage alone apart from cooperation and collaboration with academics, practitioners and other stakeholders," he explained.

He also reminded his ranks to take the maximum benefit from this workshop so in the future thus could develop competencies and skills in basic leadership and strategic planning, develop competencies and skills in managing 21st century urban resilience, as well as develop competencies and skills in building and managing modern sustainable urban infrastructure.

"Aside that, the government support is crucial in improving and innovating public services. Therefore, increasing the capacity of knowledge and skills qualifications must remain in line with the current and future conditions," he furthered.

Former Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malleyn uttered that the government should be a model for good policy making. That was why transparency is the key to educating future generations to face global issues such as democracy, climate change and the most recent pandemic response.

"It is our collective responsibility to educate future generations. What we decide, what policies we take must be based on transparency and accountability thus good governance can run smoothly at the same time in accordance with the challenges of their times," he said.
